History & Cultural Legends

Explore the historic footprints, regional legends, and cultural tales linked with this spot.

For centuries, Sissu was isolated from the rest of the country for six months of the year due to heavy winter snow blocking the Rohtang Pass. The local Lahauli people developed a self-sufficient lifestyle, cultivating barley, peas, and seed potatoes. The village served as an important halting point on the ancient trade routes to Ladakh and Tibet. With the completion of the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass, Sissu was connected to the mainland in 2020. This historical milestone turned it into a year-round tourist destination while keeping its quiet cultural landscape intact.

What to Expect & Experience

In-depth insights into geography, surroundings, local customs, and seasonal recommendations.

Sissu Village, also known as Khwaling, is a breathtaking Himalayan settlement located in the Lahaul Valley, situated immediately after crossing the north portal of the Atal Tunnel. The village is nestled along the banks of the Chandra River and surrounded by steep, snow-capped mountains. The main attraction is the Palden Lhamo waterfall, which plunges over 50 meters down a sheer cliff. Sissu acts as the gateway to the Lahaul and Ladakh travel corridors. The village features vast plantations of poplars and willows, which turn golden-orange in autumn. In winter, the entire landscape is covered in snow, offering snow sports, frozen waterfalls, and star-gazing.
